What to look for in a ready-to-eat salad or grain bowl

Protein. Under FDA nutrient content claim rules, a food can be called a good source of protein when it provides 10–19 percent of the Daily Value for protein, and high in protein when it provides 20 percent or more. For protein, the percent Daily Value factors in both the amount and quality of the protein. Several Urban Remedy salads qualify as high in protein, including two of our highest-protein options, the Organic Chicken Caesar Salad and Organic Santa Fe Style Salad with Chicken. For high-protein vegan options, the Organic Vegan Caesar Salad and Macro Bowl also each provide more than 20 percent of the Daily Value for protein per pack.

Fiber. The daily value is 28g. A good source is 10 percent, or 2.8g, and an excellent source is 20 percent, or 5.6g. The Macro Bowl and Blissful Belly Bowl provide 11g per pack, around 40 percent. All Urban Remedy salads contain a good or excellent source of fiber.

Organic. The USDA organic seal requires at least 95 percent organic ingredients, verified by an accredited certifying agent. Terms such as natural and clean carry no equivalent standard. Urban Remedy's entire salad and grain bowl range is USDA Certified Organic.

Gluten-free. The FDA sets the threshold below 20 parts per million, a measured limit rather than a formulation claim. Every product in the Urban Remedy range is made without gluten.

Oils and dressings. Dressings are where refined seed oils often appear, since they are cheaper and more shelf-stable than alternatives. Rather than relying on industrially produced finished dressings, Urban Remedy makes its own dressings with organic extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and organic sesame oil. Urban Remedy does not use canola oil, soybean oil, corn oil or other refined seed oils in its salads or bowls.

Added sugar. Nutrition panels separate total sugars from added sugars, so a product can show sugar from fruit or vegetables while containing none added. The Rainbow Salad, Vegan Caesar and Organic Chicken Caesar all provide 0g added sugar. While some products are sweetened with ingredients like coconut sugar, maple syrup, monk fruit or stevia, no Urban Remedy products contain refined sugars.

Spokesperson comment

Neka Pasquale, Founder and Chief Product Officer at Urban Remedy, said: “For Urban Remedy, organic certification isn’t simply a label or something we put on a hero product. It’s our commitment to the entire ecosystem, from the soil and the farmers who care for it, to the food we ultimately put into our bodies. That’s why every salad we make is certified organic, made without gluten or dairy, and why we’ve purchased more than 40 million pounds of organic produce since we began. This is the standard we believe in, and the way we believe all food should be grown and made.”

How much protein counts as high protein in a salad?
Under FDA labeling rules, a food can be described as high in protein when it provides 20 percent or more of the Daily Value for protein per serving. Because protein Daily Value calculations factor in protein quality as well as quantity, the amount of protein in grams alone does not determine whether a product qualifies as high in protein.

What does USDA Certified Organic actually require?
At least 95 percent of ingredients must be certified organic, with the remainder drawn from an approved list, and the producer must be verified by a USDA-accredited certifying agent. It is a legally defined standard, unlike terms such as natural or clean, which carry no equivalent requirement.

Why do the East and West Chicken Caesar salads have different figures?
The product is made in two versions for manufacturing and distribution reasons. The East version provides 34g protein and 8g fiber per pack, the West version 28g protein and 7g fiber.
